November 5th, 1960 was the date of Katherine Matilda Swinton’s birth in London. The father and stepdaughter of Sir John Swinton, a retired major general in the British Army, is Tilda Swinton. A rich heritage is reflected in her lineage that goes back to the ninth century. Alexander Swinton, William Swinton, and James Swinton are the three brothers she has.
Swinton’s academic pursuits were influenced by her experience at New Hall, Cambridge, where she graduated with degrees in Social and Political Sciences and English Literature. In 1986, she acted in the drama film ‘Caravaggio’ directed by Derek Jarman, her initial work in cinema. Her television career was initiated in 1986, when she portrayed a character in the mini-series ‘Zastrozzi: A Romance’, which was inspired by the Gothic novel by Percy Bysshe Shelley. During the years 1986 to 1990, she appeared in the TV series ‘The Open Universe’.
