Biography
Her appearances on British television shows, such as A Rather English Marriage (1998), Wives and Daughters (1999), and the miniseries Love in a Cold Climate (2001), were a highlight. Sarah Beaumont was played by her in an episode of Foyle’s War. After graduating, she was offered a role as a Bond girl and MI6 agent assigned to aid James Bond in Die Another Day, and also appeared in the show Bond Girls Are Forever and, shortly afterwards, the BAFTA tribute to the James Bond film series.
The first ‘Bond’ girl to have an Oxford degree, she also appeared in ‘Bond Girls Are Forever’, a special show, and in a tribute to the ‘James Bond’ series by ‘BAFTA’. Following the release of ‘Die Another Day’, which earned her international fame, she returned to the stage to perform in a play called ‘Hitchcock Blonde’ in 2003. Although her performance was well-received, it was also controversial. In one scene, she wore only high-heeled shoes.
Her role in ‘The Libertine’, which starred Johnny Depp, was significant in 2004. She won the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award at the British Independent Film Awards for her performance in the film. During the same year, she starred in two additional movies: ‘The Promised Land’ and the movie adaptation of the computer game series ‘Doom’. In 2005, she partnered with Keira Knightley to portray Jane in Pride and Prejudice.
She appeared alongside Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling in ‘Fracture’ in 2007. In the same year, she also acted in the movie ‘Fugitive Pieces’, an adaptation of the book of the same name by Anne Michaels that was the inaugural film at the ‘Toronto Film Festival’.
After her brief stint in Hollywood, she returned with some truly exceptional performances in smaller films like ‘An Education’ (2009), ‘Made in Dagenham’ (2010), and in ‘Barney’s Version’ (2010) opposite Paul Giamatti. In 2010, she played the role of Pussy Galore in a BBC Radio 4 adaptation of ‘Goldfinger’. In 2011, she appeared in ‘Johnny English Reborn’, a James Bond spoof that was a major commercial success.
In 2012, she made an appearance in the fantasy drama ‘Wrath of the Titans’. During the same year, she portrayed the leading role alongside Tom Cruise in the movie ‘Jack Reacher’. The movie was both critically and commercially successful. Her supporting role in her next film, ‘The World’s End’ (2013), was also praised by critics.
Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward in ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’ is her role since 2015, which is a remake of the 1960s television series ‘Thunderbirds’. ‘Voodoo in My Blood’, Massive Attack’s February 2016 music video, featured her in the lead role and was inspired by the subway scene in the 1981 film ‘Possession’. Her recent films include ‘Return to Sender’ (2015), a psychological thriller; ‘A United Kingdom’ (2016), a British biographical romantic drama film; ‘The Man with the Iron Heart’ (2017), biographical war drama-thriller; and ‘Hostiles’ (2017), an American Western.
