Personal Life
While working on Kavanagh QC, McGregor came across his future wife Eve Mavrakis, who is a production designer. Their family consists of four daughters, one of whom is an adopted child from Mongolia.
In 2007, McGregor made a public declaration that he had been sober for seven years. There was a time in his life when he was drinking every day and barely managing. Natural Nylon production company was owned by him as a part owner. The company’s primary objective was to produce films that did not meet Hollywood standards. In 2002, he resigned from the company. In 2013, Ewan McGregor received the Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to drama and charity.
Career
McGregor began his lead role in Dennis Potter’s Lipstick on Your Collar (1993) six months before completing his studies at Guildhall. In 1993, he starred with Rachel Weisz in the BBC Scarlet and Black adaptation and made his debut in Bill Forsyth’s Being Human in 1994. He was awarded an Empire Award for his performance in the thriller Shallow Grave (released in 1994). Danny Boyle and his first collaboration was the film. Mark Herman’s 1996 Channel 4 comedy-drama film Brassed Off had him playing a major role. Boyle’s Trainspotting (1996), Boyle’s adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel of the same name, saw him gain international recognition after playing Mark Renton, a heroin addict.
McGregor was the leading actor in the British film Little Voice (1998). He played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, which was produced from 1999 to 2005. Kenobi was originally played by Alec Guinness in the first Star Wars trilogy. The original trilogy had Denis Lawson, the uncle of McGregor, playing Wedge Antilles. McGregor’s performance was widely praised, despite the mixed reviews for the prequels. According to McGregor, the process of making the prequels was challenging because he had to work mostly on green screens and the dialogue wasn’t exactly Shakespeare-like. He also mentioned that the negative response to the films was difficult.
McGregor starred in Moulin Rouge! (2001) as the young poet Christian, who falls in love with the terminally-ill courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman). McGregor was recognized for his performance and was nominated for his first Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. He played the part of John Grimes in Black Hawk Down (2001) directed by Ridley Scott. He worked with Renée Zellweger to produce Down with Love (2003).
The younger Edward Bloom was played by him in Tim Burton’s critically acclaimed film Big Fish (2003). In the same period, he also received critical acclaim for his portrayal of an amoral drifter mixed up with murder in the drama Young Adam (also 2003), which co-starred Tilda Swinton. In Robots, McGregor portrayed the robot Rodney Copperbottom and the lead character in Gary Chapman’s Valiant (2005). In the same time frame, McGregor played two roles – one a duplicate of the other – alongside Scarlett Johansson in Michael Bay’s science fiction action thriller film The Island (2005). In 2005, he played a role in Marc Forster’s Stay, a psychological thriller that featured Naomi Watts and Ryan Gosling.
The Fulldome production Astronaut (2006) created for the National Space Centre featured his narration. The Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to him in 2012, making him the youngest recipient. He was in the cast of ‘August Osage County’ in 2013 along with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. Mark Renton was played by him again in ‘T2 Trainspotting’ in 2017. In 2017, he was recognized with a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film for his performance in the third season of ‘Fargo’. His most recent work involves appearing in the new Star Wars series that will be released in 2022.
